Utilizing Dimensions to Search, Build, and Understand Research Context for Research Communication and Marketing and Communication Professionals

Finding a fast and effective way to explore connections between a wide range of research data has long been high priority and need from the research community. Dimensions makes it easy to navigate the many links between grants, publications, clinical trials, patents, and policy documents through a dynamic, easy-to-use platform. Dimensions offers a better, faster way to discover, understand and analyze the global research landscape. Users can explore the connections between different researchers and institutions and access scholarly data, such as funded grants, publications, clinical trials, patents and policy documents, that they have contributed to the academic sphere. Dimensions enables researchers, staff, and leadership to measure and assess their research impact, identify collaborators and competitors, and use the data to inform decisions and develop strategic initiatives.

Led by representatives from Dimensions and the University Libraries, this workshop will provide attendees an overview of how Dimensions works, the variety and depth of research information that can be found within it, and how to use Dimensions for several use cases. This workshop will also discuss the integration and relationship between Dimensions and Altmetric, https://www.altmetric.com/explorer. This particular workshop will present several use cases and scenarios that will be of interest to research communication specialists and those responsible for marketing and communication activities across CMU.

David Scherer

David Scherer (he/him) is the Scholarly Communications and Research Curation Consultant with the University Libraries at Carnegie Mellon University. In his role, he develops and oversees the sustainable programmatic scholarly communication and research curation solutions, services, and workflows, which support the scholarly communication ecosystem at CMU. David brings expertise and knowledge in the areas of copyright, open access, rights management, author identity management, publishing practices, and research communications. David is the primary point of contact for the CMU APC Fund, Co-Founder of the CMU Library Publishing Service and serves as the Operational Lead for the CMU Elements Research Information Management (RIM) Initiative.
