Displaying Digital Collections with CollectionBuilder (CollectionBuilder 1) (Digital Project Design Series)

Displaying Digital Collections with CollectionBuilder (CollectionBuilder 1) (Digital Project Design Series)

CollectionBuilder is an open source framework for displaying digital collections. In this session, we’ll set up a new site for a collection, reviewing basic settings for the site’s look and feel, as well as metadata management.

No experience necessary for this workshop. We’ll be using Github’s web interface to build and work on a CollectionBuilder repo, so please make sure you have a solid internet connection and your laptop’s browser is up to date (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari). If you’re considering hosting a collection of digital objects (images, pdfs, videos etc.) on a purpose-built platform like Omeka or a do-anything CMS like Wordpress, CollectionBuilder (using static site generator Jekyll) is a nimble and lightweight open source alternative, especially for smaller collections that can be hosted directly on Github.

If you’ve taken PenPot 1, you’re encouraged to use some of the design ideas and assets from that session, but this is not required; demo files will be provided to all. Those looking for assistance with their own projects are encouraged to schedule additional consultation time with the instructor.

If you’re looking to get more experience with Github, the Libraries also offers various dedicated workshops on Git, GitHub, and GitPages (e.g. “Creating Websites and Portfolios with GitPages” with Chasz Griego).
