Committing to Git?: A No-Code Introduction to Git

Committing to Git?: A No-Code Introduction to Git

Are you tired of hearing your colleagues or classmates talk about cloning, merging, pulling, pushing, committing, and you’re unsure if they’re discussing a sport, a video game or a Ponzi scheme?

Have you been interested in learning how to use GitHub (or Git) for your research or projects, but haven’t had the opportunity due to any of the following reasons?

  • Lack of time for self-learning
  • Feeling that the technical barrier of entry is too high
  • Just learned about it and want to explore more
  • Have been using it for a while but don’t really understand what you’re doing

If your answer was “yes” to any of the above questions, this is the Git workshop you’ve been waiting for!

In this workshop, you will:

  • Learn what Git and GitHub are, and understand how and why version control can be useful
  • Understand the concepts behind basic Git commands like “status”, “clone”, “pull”, “push”, “add”, “commit”, etc., in a non-computer environment
  • Learn how to start using Git and GitHub for individual projects
  • Practice your learning with an interactive, no-code activity

By the end of the workshop, participants will be given the take home task of creating and configuring their own GitHub repository, with following up support from the Libraries.
