Curious what treasures live in the University Libraries' Archives & Special Collections? This workshop introduces you to our unique holdings — rare books, manuscripts, university records, and other primary sources — and shows you how to make them part of your research, coursework, or creative projects. We'll walk through what our collections contain, how to search the catalog and finding aids to locate materials, and the steps for accessing items, including how to book an appointment to view materials in person.

After this workshop, you will be able to:

• Describe the types of materials held in Archives & Special Collections
• Search the catalog and finding aids to identify relevant materials
• Request materials and book an appointment to use the collection

This session is open to all CMU students, and no previous experience with Archives or Special Collections is required. Encouraged to bring a laptop to follow along. 

Please ensure that the following fields are complete and accurate--if a field is not mentioned, there is no need to check it as appropriate defaults should be in place. Delete these instructions before posting.

  • Event Description (see FAQ for tips on descriptions). We recommended noting that the event will not be recorded and pointing to previous recordings on YouTube if available.
  • More information: Delete all room directions except for relevant room
  • (Optional) Featured image: An image is recommended for your workshop. To add an image, recommended dimensions are (200x200). Read more about images in LibCal. If you don't have an image of your own, you can select the "Workshops" image from the "Images for Workshops" folder in the Image Manager (Shared Library).
• Event Details: 
  • Library: Make sure Sorrells Library or Hunt Library is selected in the Library field.
  • Event Organizer: Select your name as the owner of the event
  • Presenter: Include yourself as a presenter (if you are) and any of your co-presenters.
  • Tags: For a list of all available tags, see this document. Please use the following tag groups to help us better market your workshops and to help users find relevant workshops:
    • Audience: Users will be able to filter the workshops using these tags
    • Category: Users will be able to filter the workshops on these categories.
    • Internal Tags: These tags are not visible to users. These will help us create internal marketing lists for different user commutities. If you want your workshop included in targeted marketing these these groups, please select them as a tag
• Event Location
  • In-Person Location/Space: Select Sorrell's Library, Den or Hunt Library locations
• Event Registration 
  • Maximum In-Person Registrations: Please note that 30 seats have been selected as a default. Change as needed keeping mind room capacity. 
  • Waitlist: We recommend keeping the waitlist enabled. This should be the default setting.
