Doppelgänger
Doppelgänger
- First Floor Exhibit Cases, Hunt Library
- May 20 - August 30, 2019
Doppelgänger: (German "double walker") is a paranormal double of a living person, typically representing evil or misfortune. In modern vernacular, the word has come to refer to any double or look-alike of a person (Wikipedia.org)
This is an exhibit of small abstract and identifiable "doppelgänger" soft sculptures made by students in the Inflatables and Soft Sculpture IDeATe class in Spring 2019, taught by Olivia Robinson.
For the abstract forms, students transformed basic, primary forms (cubes, cones, cylinders, and spheres) into expressive and complex shapes through a wide variety or physical manipulations. By exerting forces on the interiors and exteriors of the forms, students created a whole world of new shapes, textures, and expressions.
For the doppelgängers, students chose an object of meaning and recreated that object out of soft textile materials to alter or amplify our experience of that object.
Prior to appearing in this exhibit, these soft sculptures were presented at "Pushing Air," an event featuring music, soft-sculpture and textile robotics.
